Onuoha Expecting Wright-Phillips To Become Crucial For QPR

Queens Park Rangers earned their promotion spot to the Premier League after snatching the 4th spot of the Championship League in the previous season with Charlie Austin turning into a major source of goals for QPR as the 25 year old English striker scored 19 goals throughout the entire season which helped his club on finishing the campaign in the top 5 spots while the goalkeeper Robert Green also enjoyed a fantastic season as he secured 18 clean sheets.

It wasn’t however a superb season for all the players of the team which is being guided by Harry Redknapp as Shaun Wright Phillips only managed to make a limited number of appearances during the previous season and the Nigerian defender Nedum Onuoha is expecting Shaun Wright Phillips to return to the team and turn into and important figure for the club.

Nedum Onuoha said: "I really hope he can make more of an impact this season. It was tough for him last year from November onwards really when he didn't really get a look in, which was strange because even before I turned professional all I used to see was Shaun Wright-Phillips dominating football clubs. He's come back working hard and playing really well, so if he gets the chance it will be a nice boost for us which we didn't have for most of last season."

Shaun Wright-Phillips has made a total of 18 league starts for QPR counting his previous 2 seasons with the team of Harry Redknapp where the club fell into the lower relegation zone of the Premier League and had to be relegated to the Championship League and after snatching a 4th place, Redknapp has another chance of competing against the best teams in England.

Onouha Happy With Zamora Form

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha says that he is not surprised by the good form shown by striker Bobby Zamora in the last few matches. QPR have been slowly rediscovering their form in the last few matches. A slump in form during the months of January and February resulted in the club are falling out of contention for automatic promotion spots. Manager Harry Redknapp recently conceded defeat in the club’s hopes of returning automatically to the Premier league. Leicester City and Burnley sealed the top two spots in the championship.

This leaves QPR fighting for the play-off places. In order to have the best chance of getting promoted to the Premier league to the play-offs, QPR will want to take in a lot of momentum into these matches. They seem to be doing exactly that after the summer has been scoring a lot of goals in recent weeks. This has led to the praise from defender Onuoha. After the 5-2 win over Nottingham Forest at Loftus Road, Onuoha said that he is not surprised that Zamora has been in fine form in the last few weeks. The goal against Nottingham was the third for the striker in the last seven matches.

Only Charlie Astin has been the club’s top scorer with 16 league goals.

“He’s not proved me wrong, because I always felt he was fantastic. Two seasons ago, him signing on deadline day was a massive boost for everyone who was at the club. He was fantastic for the first six months and the next year he had a few injuries and so on, but I still knew how important he was because of the way he performed in the Premiership in that first season,” said Onuoha, who came to QPR are permanent deal from City after failing to establish himself.

DEFENDERS NEEDED

The manager of Queens Park Rangers, Harry Redknapp, seems to be lacking defensive choices before an important championship clash against Bolton Wanderers.

Danny Simpson, the man on whom he has relied so often in the ongoing season, is suffering from injury and similar is the case with Nedum Onuoha who would have been the ideal player to replace Simpson at the right back position.

However, Onuoha has not been completely ruled out of the game yet. His condition would be analyzed on the morning of the game before the medical team makes the final call.
There is still about a week left before the mid season transfer window gets closed. So, Redknapp can think about signing a couple of guys may be on loan to make his defence a bit stronger because the upcoming few months are going to be crucial for him and his team. If they crumble at this stage of the season, they might end up failing in their bid to get promoted to the top flight.

The Rangers are positioned second presently in the Npower Championship table, but, the three teams below them i.e. Burnley, Derby County and Nottingham Forest are pretty close to them in terms of points. So, the margin of error is not that much for them from here onwards.

Next month, QPR has to face both Burnley and Derby County in a space of 10 days and the outcomes of those two games would be very important. If the Rangers get desired results against both these teams, they would certainly start feeling that they are not too far away from their target.

The match against Burnley will be the home game for QPR, but, the match against Derby will be played away i.e. at the iPro Stadium.

JELAVIC THE RIGHT MAN

Nedum Onuoha believes that it will be the right thing for his manager Harry Redknapp to go for Nikica Jelavic during the mid season transfer window.

Jelavic is not well settled at his current club Everton at all and Redknapp is planning to place a bid of about 5 million Pounds for him in January.

The 28 years old forward was included in the starting XI of Everton for the FA Cup 3rd round match against QPR the other day. That was the first starting opportunity given to him in the last 3 months and he used that opportunity to the fullest to showcase his skills. He found the back of the net twice and guided his team to a huge 4-0 win. That performance by the Croatian international would certainly have impressed Redknapp a lot.

QPR had been relegated to the second tier in the last season, but, they have bounced back well this season and have given themselves a very good chance of getting back into the Premier League.

The Rangers have so far played 24 championship matches this season out of which they have won 13, have lost 4 and have shared points in 7 matches. They are currently at the third position in the points table with 46 points.
When Onuoha was asked about Jelavic being on the radar of his club, he said, “It would be great to play alongside him. He has got a lot of potential and a tremendous attitude.”

“The thing which I like about him the most is the way he finishes. He looks hungry for goals all the time and you want such guys in your side.”

Jelavic has so far made 59 league appearances for Everton and has scored 16 goals.

Onuoha feels Sunderland must find a way to win

Former Sunderland defender Nedum Onuoha believes that the Black Cats need to find a way to win ugly if that is what it takes to get them to safety in the Premier League.

The Wearside club currently sits second from bottom in the Premier League standings, just above Crystal Palace, having taken just one win and one draw from their nine encounters so far. Gus Poyet took charge of the club after the sacking of controversial Italian manager Paolo di Canio and he suffered a heavy defeat in his very first match in charge when Swansea City thrashed them 4-0.

But the club showed great character as they bounced back from that defeat and beat fierce rivals Newcastle United 2-1 in their next match, chalking up their first win of the season to move off the bottom. And Nedum Onuoha believes that the players at the club need to find their confidence quickly otherwise they are doomed for relegation.

Speaking from his own experiences of suffering relegation to the Championship with Queens Park Rangers last season, the former Manchester City player stated that it is imperative that Sunderland find a way to win their matches, adding that it doesn’t matter if they win by playing ugly football. Just getting the three points adds a lot of confidence to the players and once they have got a few wins on the board, they can start playing beautiful football if they want to.

Nedum Onuoha went on to add that there were moments with Rangers last season that whenever they went a goal down, they would feel there was no way to get back and that cost them a place in the Premier League and he mentioned that the Sunderland players cannot afford to do that. Otherwise, they will meet the same fate.

Onuoha thrilled to play alongside Richard Dunne

Queens Park Rangers Nedum Onuoha is relishing the prospect of linking up with Richard Dunne in a new look defensive partnership at the club as they look to bounce back from relegation and target a swift return to the Premier League.

Harry Redknapp has been looking all summer to reshuffle his defensive options after the sale of Christopher Samba to Anzhi Makhachkala and the imminent departure of former Arsenal defensive starlet Armand Traore. Dunne, a Republic of Ireland international and a former Manchester City and Aston Villa centre back, is one of the players brought in by the former Portsmouth manager to plug the gap in defense.

And Nedum Onuoha admits he is immensely excited at the chance of lining up with his former Manchester City team mate at the heart of the R’s defense this season.

According to Onuoha, Dunne was a regular at centre back at Manchester City when he came through the ranks before going on to add that he is looking forward to playing with him. He mentioned that Dunne is a player of immense quality and he wouldn’t be in the position that he is in at the moment without players like him.

He went on to add that a young player needs players like Dunne and Sylvan Distin, who was also at the club at that time to help in a young player’s transition from the academy and into the first team. He mentioned Dunne is a very commanding player and added that Rangers already have a good side and having people like him in the side is only good for the team.

Nedum Onuoha further mentioned that seeing him in training every day also teaches a lot things because he is a very experienced player and young players can learn from people like him.

Tony Fernandez has no Queens Park Rangers regrets

Air Asia owner and majority stake holder of Championship club Queens Park Rangers Tony Fernandez has insisted that he has no regrets whatsoever for buying the club despite it being relegated from the Premier League last season and still harbors hopes of turning into something very special.

Fernandez who pumped millions of pounds into the struggling club since taking over just after its promotion to the Premier League two seasons back in a bid to stave off relegation also added that being owner of clubs like Arsenal or Liverpool does not interest him at all because that would just mean inheriting someone else’s success.

Speaking to journalists in Singapore where he announced a new sponsorship deal between his budget air line Air Asia and the Singapore national team, Fernandez stated that he bought into Queens Park Rangers and it has been documented that the club had a poor season last time around and when asked whether he would take the plunge again, he made no hesitation in saying yes.

The Malaysian billionaire also stated that many people had asked him after his acquisition of the club why he didn’t buy into the likes of Liverpool or Arsenal but buying into those clubs will be like buying into someone else’s success and the club will never truly be his. He mentioned he wouldn’t have been the one who made Liverpool such a great club – Bill Shankly and the previous owner of the club did.

Tony has also given him a timeline of 10 to 12 years during which time he hopes to turn Queens Park Rangers into something special and if he does manage to achieve that he could stand back and say that they achieved what they set out to do and that is what Tony Fernandez is hopeful of doing.

PLAYERS CRITICISED

The chairman of QPR holdings Limited, Tony Fernandes, has criticized the players of his team for their indifferent attitude, but, he has made it quite clear that Harry Redknapp will continue as the manager.

QPR will surely finish this Premier League season in the relegation zone and Mr. Fernandes didn’t look amused at all with how his team has played this season.

Fernandes said, “I want that sort of guys in the team who feel proud playing in QPR jersey and give their 100% every time. I want guys who feel gutted after defeats just like me. I want guys who want to be the champions.”

“Whenever, QPR loses a game, I don’t feel good at all. I remain upset for quite a while and that’s what I expect from the players as well. They should be even more disappointed because it’s their job. I was shocked to see the reactions of a couple of players the other day.”

Talking about Harry Redknapp, Fernandes said, “Harry has done his job quite well I think and we have convinced him to stay at the club as the manager. He will be there in the next season as well.”

“There will not be any kind of pressure on Harry during the pre season transfer window. If he wants a particular player in the side, we will not force him to put that player on sale. We have already talked about this.”

Harry Redknapp was also there with Fernandes in the press conference. He said, “What happened in this season was really disappointing. We let the supporters down in a lot of matches, but, we need to move on now and focus on the next season. Hopefully, the next season will be a lot better than this one.”

PERFORMANCES IMPROVING

The centre-back of Queens Park Rangers, Nedum Onuoha, has said that he is delighted with the performance of his team recently.

The QPR team hasn’t lost any match in 2013 so far. QPR has played 3 matches this year so far out of which it has won one match, while, the remaining couple of matches have finished in the form of draws. That one victory of QPR came against a very strong Chelsea side. QPR will now face West Bromwich Albion in a FA Cup clash on Tuesday.

Talking to the reporters ahead of the match against West Bromwich Albion, Onuoha said, “We struggled a lot in the matches that we played last year, but, we have started this year brilliantly. We have faced a couple of very strong teams in the form of Chelsea and Tottenham recently and we have performed very well against both of them. When you perform well against the top teams, it gives you a lot of self belief.”

“We will have to back ourselves and try to get points out of every match. We have already lost a lot of matches and if we have to make up for that, we will have to win almost each and every game that we will play from now on. This is really difficult, but, at least, we can try and give our best.”

“Our recent performances have been very good, but, there is no place for complacency at this level. We need to carry on our good form in the further matches.”

When asked about the new manager of QPR, Harry Redknapp, Onuoha said, “He is doing a fantastic job. He has come with fresh strategies and those strategies have really worked for us. The results have started going in our favour since his arrival which is great.”
